Welcome to Year 6 (Archive 14-15)
Your teacher this year is Mrs Burton and the teaching assistants are Ms Caldwell and Ms Johannasen. We have all settled in well and are getting used to the class routines.
In year 6 all children are expected to read every night for at least 15 minutes. There is a weekly times table challenge and champion so you need to be practising rapid recall of the times tables. Homework will be given out on a Friday and if it is in on Monday you will be given two silver stars. Homework must be in by Wednesday at the latest. It is really important to do your homework as it helps to consolidate your learning from the week and shows what you have learned.
This half term in year 6 our theme is ‘Oh I do Like To Be Beside The Seaside’. We are going to be learning about the history of seaside holidays in Britain along with designing and making fairground rides. We are also going to be very busy preparing for SATs. SATs week is the 11th – 15th May. Please make sure that all homework is completed
During your time in year 6 you will be given the opportunity to learn a brass instrument. These lessons are delivered by the Lancashire music service on a weekly basis.
Although much of the time spent in year 6 is working hard in preparation for SATs the aim is to have as much fun as possible as well as learning and making rapid progress. There are some links to websites below that might help you with your learning in preparation for SATs in May.
Fire Service Visit
White Watch from Skelmersdale Fire Station visited Year 6 today to talk about Road Safety. We had a fab time learning and using the new 'interactive pebbles' topped off by being allowed to have a look around the fire engine. Thanks White Watch!
Jack from SHARES is coming in this half term to do 'Global Games' - Week 1 was Equa Volley - Volleyball from Equador!
Then Week 2 - when it was too wet to brave the outdoors - we made volcanoes!
Year 6 have been learning about ratio and proportion. Some of the children solved fruity problems.
We've been changing components in circuits to see how they change.
This week we have been solving capacity problems in Maths. They were tricky even for our Able and Talented Pupils!

In year 6 we take part in the wider opportunities scheme. We have weekly brass lessons taught by Mr Crane from Lancashire Music Service.
Safer Internet Day 2015
We learnt about ways of protecting ourselves online. We went on the internet and had a go at the Safer Internet Quiz 2015.
We made pledges to help stay safe online, and designed safer internet posters.
In our English lessons we have been reading and analysing a range of persuasive arguments.
We have been learning about Hinduism this half term! We found out that 'Moksha' is the ultimate goal for hindi people. We designed board games to reach Moksha, thinking about what may help or hinder along the way.
This half term we are having tennis coaching. We are all greatly improving with our tennis skills.
As part of our ‘In Your Element’ topic, Jayne from United Utilities came to deliver a Water Workshop. We learned about;
• The water cycle
• How water is treated and where it is stored
• Reservoir safety
• How to conserve water
• How water is used in other countries.
We all made a promise to save water in some way as we found that many of us waste water unnecessarily.
