Delph Side Sports Provision
Here at Delph Side we value the importance sport plays in the lives of our children as it equips them with the skills of winning and losing, doing so graciously; provides them with a means to having a healthy life style; develops confidence that can be carried into other learning; and most importantly allows them to have fun!
Our PE Subject Leader, Andy Holding, monitors the subject through the collection and analysis of data and uses this to target sports provision across the school.
Our University of Delph Side clubs programme has a variety of sports clubs over the course of the year. These are available to children from their Reception year to Year 6. These include:
- Girl’s Football
- Multi sports
- Tag Rugby
- Rugby League (contact)
In addition, the school is part of the SHARES Sports Association which is chaired by Chris Upton (headteacher). The association allows the school to participate in a range of sporting competitions provided SHARES in addition to School Games Competitions run by the West Lancashire School Sports Partnership. This year we have targeted the following events:
- Football League
- Girl’s Football Competition
- Y3/4 Football Competition
- Y1/2 Football Competition
- Netball League
- Cross Country
- Robin Park Athletics Competition
- Dodgeball Competition
- Basket Ball Competition
- Rugby League Competition
- Swimming Gala
- A range of events aimed at Able and Talented children, for example gymnastics, athletics at Edge Hill
- A range of inclusive events
- Skelmersdale Olympics (with every child participating)
We employ high quality sports coaches from the SHARES who provide our children with high quality PE lessons. This is reinforced by our playground provision where we zone our playground in order that we can provide different sporting activities each day and small games and skipping all of which leading to enjoyment of keeping healthy whilst developing skills. This is led by Mr. Mather our Sports Competition Co-ordinator.
In partnership with SHARES, we have been involved with a ‘Sports Leaders’ programme for our Year 5 pupils. Our pupils are now sports leaders on our playground at lunchtime with our KS1 children. In addition, SHARES support us with our coaching needs in preparation for tournaments and competitions.
We also have strong links to Glenburn Sports College and use their facilities and staff for special event such as our Healthy Living weeks and World Cup Week.
We have developed a programme of swimming with all children in Key Stage 2 accessing school swimming for at least 5 terms (more than the statutory guidance) and top up swimming is available to help ensure that our children have highest swimming skills possible. As a group of schools, SHARES now employs its own swimming instructors enabling us to provide 45 minute lessons. As a result 81% of our Y6 pupils met National Curriculum requirements for swimming in 2014 to 2015 which is above national averages.
